58 SANTANDER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
THE CULTURE OF EUROPE

65 musical and stage events, 22 in Santander and 43 around Cantabria, make up the identity of the 2009 edition of the Santander International Festival. These are events that seek to blend the historic heritage of our European past with the attractive intercultural future to form a dazzling new Europe.

Santander has been the European capital for music and the stage for many years, thanks to its Festival which is a clear illustration of the objectives set by the European Festival Association of which Santander has been a member since 1954. Santander strengthens its status as a European cultural capital in the warm month of August as its plays host to the Symphonic Universe, The Magic of the Stage: Opera and Ballet, promoting Choral and Chamber Music in the Historic Settings of Cantabria, where Europe's first inhabitants sketched the idea of Europe with their imaginative paintings in the cave world that winds its way under the length and breadth of the Cantabria.

But Europe's present reality sets the parameters for its own evolution, which the Santander Festival not only takes on as its own, but converts them into the trademark of its European identity. Dynamically aware of such an irreversible evolution, the Festival sees itself as "an intercultural environment" that gleans the singularities of peoples and multicultural societies to create a world improved by mutual knowledge.

With eyes firmly set on 2016, the Festival emphasises, with its commitment to the cause, the great desire to connect the past and the future through every present moment in which the idea of Europe is based on creativity and innovation; creativity in the face of the inexorable changes of a transforming society, and innovation so that our ways of life may run parallel to the path of this transformation.

Spanish Colour, the aura of Old and New Europe, and intercultural dialogue are the spaces that sustain the identity of this International Festival, which is Spanish through and through, European by tradition, and open to the enrichening mix of cultures that will without doubt determine our futures.

THE GATEWAY TO THE SANTANDER INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2009

From the street

It will not be fanfares but choreographies which announce the start of the 58th Santander International Festival. Popular streets of the capital, and others from the heart of Cantabria, will set the stage as the Festival has its own prelude, making it only too clear to our people that the Festival is about to begin.

The street will be the stage, and the hearts of the spectators the bed upon which the life of the 58th Santander and Cantabria International Festival, European Festival for 2016 and for Always, will start to beat.

SANTANDER - PALACIO DE FESTIVALES

In times gone by the popular Plaza Porticada, and nowadays the Palacio de Festivales, virtuous hosts from which the Santander International Festival has staged and still stages the great lyrical and symphonic events of its programme. Santander, the capital of Cantabria and Europe, represents a festive artery for a better world.

THE MAGIC OF STAGE
Lyrical, theatrical and choreographic effusion from four centuries of history: the Barroque 18th century and lightness of Vinci, the romantic and bel canto of Tchaikovsky and Donizetti, the watchful eye on the 20th century of Bernstein and Antonio Ruiz, and a wink towards the new technologies of a multimedia extravaganza and the world premiere of a Spanish opera.

CANTABRIA - THE HISTORIC SETTINGS

Santander and Cantabria enrich and blend with each other as two parts of the same reality, a symbiosis that the Santander International Festival has established itself upon and which indelibly becomes Cantabria?s festival as well, as it reaches out to the architectural splendour of its Historic Settings and the active participation of its people.

SPANISH COLOUR

"Eis aquí se descobre a nobre España,
como cabeça ali de Europa toda,
em cujo senhorio e gloria estranha
muitas voltas tem dado a fatal roda"
(Luis de Camòens. Os Luisíadas)

Spanish music has always rung out in our Festival as a reference of our creative culture, which gleamed in the golden centuries of the Renaissance lighting the path of Old Europe and which today shines once more, opening prospects for greater awareness of the New Europe.

RECOVERED TRADITIONS

"History is only the will of man (Jorge Guillén. Historia extraordinaria)

Development towards the future is that which rests on the constant reflection, and recollection of the past. This is the constant that characterises the Santander International Festival as it looks back at musical forms from the past. It is not a nostalgic reflection, but more educational and above all festive, to make us feel proud of a former reality that we were bequeathed by those who preceded us in this sustainable development through creativity and innovative imagination.

FACING THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY

"A country is always a future company, a bow bent towards tomorrow"
(Antonio Machado. LA GUERRA)

Santander is progressing towards the European Capital of Culture 2016 through its Festival promoting "the power of imagination": new works that will come to light through the window the Festival opens out to let them be heard broad and wide, some by direct commission and others thanks to the opportunity of their world premiere, and many performers will come to answer this call as leading actors in the new century that has just begun. May the time be profitable for all of them.

INTERCULTURES
"The arts have been building cultural bridges, playing an important role in facilitating communication among culturally different societies, and establishing privileged ways of communication."
European Declaration on the mission of Arts Festivals- 2009)

This declaration proceeds from the European Union urging Arts Festivals to promote in their programmes the contact and relationship between cultures of the world. The Santander International Festival, faithful to this commitment, proposes a look at the fantastic universe of music and dance coming from cultural corners of our yet unknown sphere, and knowledge of which will complement that initiated last year within the framework of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, promoted by The European Union.

INTERCULTURAL NANSA

Songs from the cultures- From the Mediterranean sea to the Caspian Sea

"If my voice were to die on soil
Take it near the sea
And leave it on the shore"

(Rafael Alberti. Marinero en tierra)

INTERCULTURAL NANSA is the pursuit and projection from the essences of one of the most beautiful corners of Cantabria, the Nansa Valley, to the most remote confines of universal culture. It is not a political movement, but moreover a research process to stimulate the incorporation of our people to a world more and more open to interculturality.

The playful reference to the Songs of Solomon's Singers is simply a pretext to reveal the singing of peoples and the music of their cultures.

Co-produced with the State Society of Cultural Commemorations (SECC)

In pursuance with its aim to promote joint actions with uniform criteria between institutions with the responsibility for the development of culture, The Santander International Festival and the State Society of Cultural Commemorations (SEEC) present a number of collaboration initiatives to stimulate understanding and knowledge of our history through its most significant events.

MUSIC FROM THE TIMES OF THE EXPULSION OF THE MOORS (1609)
"Nace bárbaro el hombre; redímese de bestia, cultivándose"

"Man is born a barbarian: he removes the beast, through culturing himself"
(Baltasar Gracián. Oráculo manual y ante la prudencia)

The expulsion from Spanish territory of the so-called Moors represents a date (1609) of undoubted and conflictive political significance, but it is also encompassed in an aesthetic sphere which coincided with one of the most brilliant epochs in the history of Spanish music. The Renaissance established in the humanism of polyphony and of the instrumental music which from the vihuela to the guitar, was the model of creativity and mastery acclaimed and envied in the whole of Europe.

CENTENARY OF THE PASSING OF ISAAC ALBÉNIZ (1860-1909)

The composer Isaac Albéniz died on 18 May, 1909 in Cambo-les-Bains (France), the same year in which he finished the great piano work of the 20th century, the Iberia Suite, written during the last years of his life (1905-1909) at his residence in Nice.

Albéniz was the synthesis of the romantic century (19th) in which he was destined to live, and which he lived to an intensity of almost novelistic proportions, and the new century (20th), which he understood how to design from the originality of his incomparable creativity.
